Family Program
The staff of Hoag Chemical Dependency Recovery Center recognizes that the chemically dependent person is not the only one who suffers from the effects of substance abuse. Those who care about the chemically dependent person are impacted as the problem progresses.
We treat chemical dependency as a family disease. Our program is designed to meet your needs as well as the needs of your family members and significant others.
As the disease of addiction has progressed in your life, those around you may have developed parallel behaviors that are characterized by emotional sufferings similar to what you have experienced. It is not unusual for family members to experience feelings of despair, anger, helplessness and hopelessness.
Family members and significant others need understanding, support and guidance to bring about recovery for the entire family system. For this reason, the Hoag Chemical Dependency Recovery Center offers the Family Program, which consists of:
- Family Orientation – An overview of the care provided is presented to familiarize family members and significant others with the patient’s treatment program and additional opportunities for family involvement
- Alanon Beginner’s Meeting – An introduction to the 12-step support group for family members/significant others
- Visiting Hours – Specific days and times are provided for family and friends to visit patients
- Family Week – Occurs most often during the last week of the patient’s stay. The goals of family participation are:
- To have family members/significant others begin identifying feelings and problems relating to the use of chemicals within the family system
- To gain an awareness of chemical dependency as a disease that affects the entire family system
- To identify problems and dynamics of family interactions and to gain the knowledge and tools to implement effective communication begin making necessary changes
- To plan a Continuing Care program that supports continued recovery
