Treatment Options

A guiding principle of the Hoag Chemical Dependency Recovery Center is that addiction is chronic, progressive and treatable. At the Hoag Chemical Dependency Recovery Center, treatment is based on the individual. People are different and their treatment requirements are different. For that reason, after considering the patient’s physical, psychological and psychosocial needs, the Chemical Dependency Recovery Center offers several treatment options.

Detoxification

Evaluation of the chemically dependent patient begins with a careful collection of data. This is done with the completion of a thorough history and physical exam performed by a physician experienced in addiction medicine. Complete blood counts and metabolic laboratory analysis routinely are completed. All medical care is overseen by a full-time Medical Director. Patients are seen by their attending physician at least once a day while in detox.

An intensive regime of medications often is required to detoxify a patient withdrawing from years of using powerful mind-altering drugs. Effective approaches with a strong scientific basis have been developed to reduce the incidence of complications and unpleasant symptoms.

At Hoag we detoxify approximately 600 patients per year and, therefore, have developed well-tested protocols to assist patients through withdrawal with a minimum amount of discomfort. Patients gradually are detoxified while being medicated for their symptoms and to prevent medical complications.

During the detoxification phase patients are encouraged to attend activities at the center to enhance their recovery process.

Rehabilitation

(A) Inpatient Program

The Inpatient Program at the Hoag Chemical Dependency Recovery Center provides intensive treatment in a safe, structured environment. The program incorporates medical, emotional and therapeutic support. Treatment is personalized to meet the individual needs of each patient. As part of an acute-care hospital, patients admitted to the Chemical Dependency Recovery Center have access to the medical services of Hoag Hospital, the area’s leading healthcare facility.

(B) Day Treatment Program (Partial Hospitalization)

Day Treatment patients undergo the same program of therapy, education and counseling as inpatients with the exception of sleeping at the hospital. Day Treatment patients arrive at the Chemical Dependency Recovery Center by 8:00 a.m. and depart at approximately 10:00 p.m. Meals are provided.

The Family Program is an integral part of the rehabilitation process.

Evening Outpatient Program

The outpatient treatment program is designed to promote recovery for both the chemically dependent patient and his/her family. Patients are given the tools they need to develop a new self-image, initiate and enjoy positive life changes and stay clean and sober. Families are an integral part of the treatment process. Both patients and families learn appropriate, healthy ways of coping with stress and changing behavior patterns.

The evening outpatient program consists of 32 sessions over an eight-week period with meetings held on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30-9:30 p.m. and Fridays from 6:30-10:00 p.m. Friday evening is Family Night and all family members and significant others are invited to attend (children 13 and older are welcome). The program includes education, group process, family participation and continuing care for up to one year.

Prior to entering the outpatient program clients are assessed clinically to determine whether this level of care is appropriate. A person entering evening outpatient treatment must be alcohol and drug free for a minimum of 72 hours prior to beginning treatment and throughout the duration of the program. Random drug screens are obtained throughout treatment. Since outpatient treatment is the least intensive level of care, inability to maintain sobriety is usually indicative of the need for a more structured level of care.

The Continuing Care Component provides ongoing counseling and support resources to both patients and families for up to one year following treatment.
