Building A Career Through Education

Hoag Hospital is committed to providing an environment where nurses are encouraged and supported in advancing their career through higher education and training. Hoag provides a variety of programs designed to assist nursing professionals who want to enhance their education such as:

Tuition Reimbursement

Hoag's tuition reimbursement program offers nurses an excellent method for obtaining a degree or enhancing their work environment and practical expertise. Continuing education that leads to earning a degree, certification, relates to an employee's current job, or will lead to a hospital profession, is supported through this comprehensive program.

Based on a sliding scale, expenses that are eligible for reimbursement include tuition, registration fees, lab fees, special equipment and required books. Hoag employees may request tuition reimbursement after one year of employment and department head approval prior to attending a class. Hoag's reimbursement process is simple. After the course has ended, just submit proof of completion such as a grade report and receipts, and the reimbursement request is processed. Satisfactory completion of the course is required to receive reimbursement.

Scholarships

Based on the strength of an individual's application, Hoag Hospital is pleased to award annual scholarships to nurses pursuing either a baccalaureate or master's degree in nursing. Criteria include: financial need, professional growth, accomplishments in specialty and critical care areas, community and civic involvement and the applicant's contribution to the nursing profession as well as the hospital.

Scholarships are available to applicants enrolled in an accredited program and the amounts awarded are based on individual need, expenses involved in the program and the criteria noted above.

Onsite BSN and MSN Programs

For those nurses interested in working toward a baccalaureate degree, Hoag Hospital offers a unique BSN program with California State University-Long Beach (CSULB). Hoag and CSULB have joined forces to create a convenient way for nurses to enroll in and complete their BSN degree onsite at Hoag Hospital.

An onsite MSN program is also offered through CSULB. Classes are provided at Hoag and lead to a clinical nurse specialist degree in a choice of several specialty areas. Both programs directly benefit Hoag's nursing staff by offering a convenient method for pursuing an advanced degree while in turn, benefiting our patients through the enhanced education of the staff caring for them.

Onsite CE Program

Another remarkable program available to Hoag's nursing staff is onsite continuing education. In order to assist its nursing staff in maintaining licensure, certification and encouraging career growth, Hoag offers more than 60 onsite continuing education courses taught by a team of 12 full-time nursing education coordinators and eight resource nurses.

Instructor-directed educational courses are offered in a variety of areas such as general nursing, critical care, maternal child, job/unit specific and hospital-wide training and development. Computer-assisted and self-learning modules are also offered to Hoag's nursing staff free of charge. Hoag's comprehensive continuing education program is structured to conveniently provide our nurses with the resources necessary to enhance their education and career goals.

Clinical Ladder Program

Hoag Hospital's Clinical Ladder recognizes achievement, promotes professional growth and rewards dozens of Registered Nurses for their excellent performance in clinical practice. Through their involvement in continuous quality improvement activities, precepting new employees, research and education, Clinical Ladder nurses help to ensure a high level of expertise in the delivery of nursing care to patients and families.

Clinical Ladder offers advancement for professional clinical nurses whose goal is to remain in the clinical setting as a direct patient and family caregiver.
