Epilepsy Surgery

The Epilepsy Center at Hoag Hospital offers leading-edge diagnostic and treatment capabilities in a caring, patient-focused environment.

The center is run by renowned experts in the field – The Epilepsy Center Medical Director Barbara Swartz, M.D., Ph.D. and Surgical Director Richard Kim, M.D., M.S. Each came to Hoag with the goal of establishing a state-of-the-art program dedicated to meeting the individualized needs of its patients.

“The Epilepsy Center at Hoag Hospital offers everything patients need in one facility,” explains Dr. Swartz. “This enables us to provide seamless care, without the obstacles and lengthy delays that can occur in other programs.”

“Being responsive to patients is our top priority,” adds Dr. Kim. “We take time to answer questions and explain the various procedures and options available to patients.”

Another key component of Hoag's patient-focused care is the center’s dedicated nurse coordinator who serves as the patient liaison, carefully coordinating appointments and acting as a central resource for patients and their family members. The center also provides a wealth of educational materials and an epilepsy support group.

In addition, The Epilepsy Center remains at the forefront of leading-edge research. Currently, Hoag physicians are involved with several studies analyzing the effects of anti-epileptic drugs on cognition and mood, as well as an analysis on the effects of seizures on the brain and improvements in neuroimaging.
