Hoag Epilepsy Center provides an individualized, comprehensive approach to the diagnosis, treatment, management and research of epilepsy and seizure disorders. Improving each patient’s quality of life is our goal. The Center’s multidisciplinary team of neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuropsychologists, nurses and technicians is dedicated to providing the safest, most effective and least invasive treatments to help patients achieve the highest functionality.


Richard Kim, M.D., M.S.
Medical Director, Hoag Epilepsy Center

Dr. Kim earned his undergraduate degree in biochemistry from University of California, Riverside, followed by a master of science in biochemistry and neurophysiology. He then earned his medical degree from St. Louis University School of Medicine in Missouri, graduating Magna Cum Laude. Dr. Kim’s postgraduate training included an internship and residency at New York University Medical Center and a fellowship in epilepsy surgery at Yale University School of Medicine. Dr. Kim serves as medical director Hoag Epilepsy Center, and is a diplomate of the American Board of Neurological Surgeons.

An active researcher, Dr. Kim has published numerous scientific articles and chapters in neurosurgical textbooks, on subjects ranging from surgery for epilepsy to complex spine surgery. He has also been an invited speaker at many professional conferences.

Dr. Kim is active in many professional organizations, serving on committees with the American Epilepsy Society, the Epilepsy Foundation of America and the American Association of Neurological Surgeons.


Barbara E. Swartz, M.D., Ph.D.
Epileptologist

As an epileptologist, a neurologist specializing in the treatment of epilepsy, Dr. Swartz focuses solely on patients with epilepsy and seizure disorders. She is board certified in neurology and neurophysiology and has more than 15 years of experience studying and treating epilepsy with surgical, as well as medical techniques. Dr. Swartz earned her undergraduate degree in chemistry from Chapman College in Orange, California. She then attended University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) where she received a Ph.D. in pharmacology and her medical degree. Residency training was at the Neurological Institute of New York at Columbia University. Her post-doctoral training included a neuropharmacology fellowship as well as a fellowship in epilepsy and clinical neurophysiology at UCLA. Her research has centered on neuroimaging and cognition as well as the complexities that life transitions create in treating and controlling epilepsy, especially problems in the adolescent and geriatric populations.
