Treating Coronary Artery Disease
Based on the results of the diagnostic tests, the symptoms of coronary artery disease can be treated with medications, or procedures such as angioplasty or bypass surgery. Generally, it does not require hospitalization to initiate and manage angina by utilizing medications. When medical management is either not effective or when the blockages are severe, a procedure such as angioplasty or heart surgery may be required. Hoag is fortunate to have over 33 cardiologists skilled in angioplasty and stent placement and an exclusive group of cardiac surgeons on staff at Hoag Heart and Vascular Institute.
Although there are very effective treatments for coronary artery disease, none of them are a cure. The blockages or narrowing of the arteries can return or increase unless the risk factors are controlled and behaviors are modified.
For more information on angioplasty, stent placement and artherectomy, see our Procedures section.
