Welcome to Hoag Heart Valve Center

Hoag Heart Valve Center is a resource for both physicians and patients who have an interest in learning more about advanced diagnostics and treatment options for valve disease.

The term heart valve disease is commonly used when a valve either fails to open properly (stenosis) or fails to close completely, allowing backward flow of blood (regurgitation). Heart valve disease can occur in any one or combination of the four valves, but diseases of the aortic and mitral valves are the most common affecting over 5% of the population. If left untreated, valve disease will often lead to heart failure and other complications.

The Hoag Heart Valve Center is dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of valvular heart disease. Led by Pravin M. Shah, MD, MACC, an internationally renowned cardiologist with valve expertise, the center provides convenient and coordinated access to education, diagnostic and treatment services unique to individuals with known or suspected heart valve disease.

Team Approach: Collaboration between cardiologists and surgeons with valve expertise.

Valve disease is a complex problem. Not all of the factors contributing to development of valve disease are completely understood. Likewise, selecting the appropriate treatment and the timing of treatment require careful identification of the specific problem areas of the valve and matching them with the optimal treatment plan. This requires close collaboration between the cardiologist and surgeon before, during and after treatment. At the Hoag Heart Valve Center, this collaboration combines the expertise of an internally known cardiologist specializing in echocardiography, Pravin Shah, MD with the advanced surgical skill of accomplished cardiac surgeons, like Aidan Raney, MD. Our team approach means valve patients have repair rather than replacement with a 95% success rate and the complications associated with either under treatment or treatment timing are avoided.
