Co-Generation Plant
Construction for the Co-Generation Plant, a base-loaded plant to generate power, began in September 2003. The two-story, 24,000 square-foot facility is located on the lower campus and houses generators capable of supplying as much as 4.5 megawatts of power (enough to power 4,000 homes).
"This plant allows us to develop our campus in the future. The Co-Gen Plant also adds another layer of redundant power in addition to Southern California Edison and emergency generators in a crisis situation," says Langston Trigg, vice president, facilities design and construction.
Many power plants operate by producing power and releasing the resulting waste heat into the environment, which is not the most energy-efficient means of operation. Hoag Hospital's lower campus plant captures its waste heat and converts it to chilled and hot water, which will be used for the air conditioning and heating systems of the hospital to maximize energy output.
