It is important to understand the difference between Hospital Acquired Infections and Community Acquired Infections:

Patients who experience a Hospital Acquired infection:
  • Come in to the hospital without an infection but experience one during their hospital stay.
Patients who experience a Community Acquired infection:
  • Come in to the hospital with an infection. They do not get the infection from their hospital stay.

Hoag Hospital submits Hospital Acquired infection data to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSH). An aggressive internal target of 0.40 rate was selected based on published national data related to MRSA infection rates reported to NHSN.
