Computed Tomography (CT)

What is Computed Tomography (CT)?

A CT or CAT scan is an imaging technique that produces cross-sectional images, like slices, of your head or body that are more detailed than those images produced by conventional X-ray exams.

What do I need to do to prepare for my CT at Hoag?

If scheduled for an exam at the main hospital, please check in at the Outpatient Registration department located in the Women's Pavilion prior to coming to the Radiology department.

Most exams require that you check in 30 minutes prior to your exam time. Please refer to the specific instructions for your exam as noted below.

Be sure to notify your physician if you have any allergies to iodine, or any similar allergies to foods or medications.

If possible, drink plenty of fluids starting 24 hours prior to your exam so that you are well hydrated. Two hours before your scheduled exam time, drink clear fluids only.

If you have a prescription for laboratory (blood chemistry panel or serum creatinine), it should be obtained at least 1-2 days before your CT scan. If you have diabetes, or are age 65 or older, this lab work should be obtained within the last 90 days. Please call your physician if you have questions.

Please dress in loose, comfortable two-piece clothing. No belts, buttons or zippers.

Please call 800/309-XRAY (9729) for any additional questions or concerns.

What should I bring with me when I arrive at Hoag?

Many insurance providers require prior authorization. Please verify with your ordering physician that, if required, an authorization has been obtained, to avoid any unexpected costs, delays or cancellations.

Bring your physician's written order, insurance card and proof of pre-authorization (if applicable) with you to your appointment.

Please bring a current list of your medications, including herbal and vitamin supplements, as well as the current dose of these medications. If possible, click on PATIENT HOME MEDICATION LIST, print and complete this document prior to coming in for your scheduled appointment.

In addition, please print and complete the CT OUTPATIENT QUESTIONNAIRE prior to coming in for your appointment.

Also, please bring any prior exams pertaining to your procedure that were not done at a Hoag or Newport Imaging facility.
