What is Diagnostic X-Ray?

Diagnostic X-ray describes a photographic technique which is helpful in allowing your physician to see various structures within your body in order to achieve a better understanding of how efficiently they're performing.

What do I need to do to prepare for my exam at Hoag?

If scheduled for an exam at the main hospital, please check in at the Outpatient Registration department located in the Women's Pavilion prior to coming to the Radiology department.

Please plan to arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled exam time. Please refer to the specific instructions for your exam as noted below. Any specific prep instructions for your exam are also noted below.

Please dress in loose, comfortable two-piece clothing. No belts, buttons or zippers.

Please call 800/309-XRAY (9729) for any additional questions or concerns.

What should I bring with me when I arrive at Hoag?

Many insurance providers require prior authorization. Please verify with your ordering physician that, if required, an authorization has been obtained, to avoid any unexpected costs, delays or cancellations.

Bring your physician's written order, insurance card and proof of pre-authorization (if applicable) with you to your appointment.

Also, please bring any prior exams pertaining to your procedure that were not done at a Hoag or Newport Imaging facility.

Chest X-ray

Bone X-ray

Voiding Cystourethrogram (VCUG)

Intravenous Pyelogram (IVP)

Obtain either EVAC-Q-KWIK or TRIDATE EVACUANT prep kit. Follow the 24 hour preparation instructions, starting at noon the day before your scheduled appointment. Additionally, drink an extra 16 oz. of fluid the morning of your exam. No solid food after noon the day before your exam.

Print and complete the DIAGNOSTIC PATIENT QUESTIONNAIRE prior to coming in for your appointment.

Please bring a current list of your medications, including herbal and vitamin supplements, as well as the current dose of these medications. If possible, click on PATIENT HOME MEDICATION LIST, print and complete this document prior to coming in for your scheduled appointment.

Be sure to notify your physician if you have any allergies to iodine, or any similar allergies to foods or medications.

Patients with renal insufficiency, please call your physician for prep instructions.

Arthrogram

Print and complete the DIAGNOSTIC PATIENT QUESTIONNAIRE prior to coming in for your appointment.

Hysterosalpingogram

Print and complete the HYSTROSALPINGOGRAPHY QUESTIONNAIRE prior to coming in for your appointment.

Please bring a current list of your medications, including herbal and vitamin supplements, as well as the current dose of these medications. If possible, click on PATIENT HOME MEDICATION LIST, print and complete this document prior to coming in for your scheduled appointment.

Be sure to notify your physician if you have any allergies to iodine, or any similar allergies to foods or medications.

Myelogram

Please drink fluids starting at 24 hours prior to your exam, so that you are well hydrated. Drink clear liquids only after midnight the night before until 2 hours before your procedure, and then nothing by mouth. Check in 1 1/2 hours prior to your procedure time. You will be monitored for 4 to 6 hours after the procedure. You will need a driver to drive you home.

Lumbar Puncture

Please drink fluids starting at 24 hours prior to your exam, so that you are well hydrated. Drink clear liquids only after midnight the night before until 2 hours before your procedure, and then nothing by mouth. Check in 1/2 hour prior to your procedure time. You will need a driver to drive you home. If this is also for chemotheraphy treatment, you will need to check in 1 1/2 hours prior to your procedure time.
