Outpatient wound care has been provided in Hoag Hospital's Physical Therapy department since 1975. The physical therapy team includes certified wound care specialists who provide individualized assessment and treatment of non-healing wounds and ulcers.
- Arterial ulcers
- Venous ulcers
- Non-healing diabetic wounds
- Pressure ulcers
- Problematic surgical wounds
- Radiation tissue damage
- Burns
- Trauma wounds
- Debridement: removal of unhealthy tissue
- Topical medication as prescribed by the physician
- Specialized dressing to promote healing and limit the potential for infection
- Vacuum-assisted wound closure and/or other modalities
- Edema control
- Pressure relief
- Education regarding dressing changes, skin care, nutrition and proper footwear
- Monitoring of wound for infection
- Referral to dietary and diabetes education services when indicated

- Provide continuity of wound care
- Prevent or control infection
- Remove necrotic tissue
- Optimize drainage
- Prevent premature wound closure
- Provide education on treatment and prevention
- Decrease hospitalizations
After complete assessment and consultation with the patient, the physical therapist will provide the referring physician with a care plan for the patient. Upon the physician's approval, the treatment will begin. The doctor will receive monthly progress reports to assist in the ongoing care and progress of the patient.
