Guiding Women Through Hysterectomy With A Caring Touch

For women suffering from severe pelvic pain and heavy, persistent vaginal bleeding, a hysterectomy - the surgical removal of the uterus -often means relief from bothersome symptoms. And for a woman diagnosed with uterine cancer, a hysterectomy can mean survival.

Women can take comfort in knowing that Hoag Women's Health Services is committed to providing leading-edge gynecologic surgical options with a focus on top-notch patient care. From abdominal and vaginal to less invasive forms of hysterectomy, Hoag's team of highly trained physicians and specialized nursing staff strive to provide healthcare options in a warm, caring environment.

"Hysterectomies are one of the most common surgeries among women, second only to cesarean section," explains Stephanie McClellan, M.D., a gynecologist on staff at Hoag Hospital and medical advisor to Hoag Women's Health Services. "And at Hoag, where we perform a significant number of hysterectomies each year, women have several options in terms of this procedure."

Depending on the patient's condition, the surgery may involve the removal of just the uterus, a partial hysterectomy, or removal of the uterus, cervix, ovaries and fallopian tubes, a total hysterectomy. Hoag specializes in different forms of this procedure, performing hysterectomies both abdominally or through the vagina. The hospital also offers the latest, less invasive forms of this surgery, laparoscopic hysterectomy.

Laparosopically assisted vaginal hysterectomy involves a laparoscope, which allows the surgical team to see inside the abdomen. The patient and her physician will determine which type of procedure is most appropriate for treatment - abdominal, vaginal or laparoscopic.

After surgery, patients are typically transferred to the 10th floor in Hoag's West Tower, which is dedicated to caring for gynecologic surgical patients. The floor has been recently renovated and redesigned with the special needs of these patients in mind. Complete with private patient rooms, the unit promotes a relaxing and comfortable environment conducive to healing.

An experienced nursing staff complements the new amenities on the 10th floor. This compassionate team of nurses, who specialize in caring for patients recovering from gynecologic surgery, is continually educated on the latest advances in the field and on leading-edge equipment used in patient care.

"A hysterectomy can often be a blessing to women suffering from serious gynecologic symptoms," says Dr. McClellan. "At Hoag, we combine state-of-the-art surgical techniques with a skilled physician and nursing staff, therefore ensuring women receive the best care available when undergoing this procedure and helping them quickly return to an active lifestyle."
