OB Education Classes and Services

Hoag Hospital's OB Education Department offers comprehensive services and programs to guide you through all stages of your pregnancy. The video below offers a comprehensive virtual tour of our Labor, Delivery & Recovery (LDR) and Mother Baby Unit (MBU) facilities.

OB Education Classes Hoag's OB Education classes offer something for everyone, from expectant and new parents to grandparents. The wide variety of educational classes include topics such as pre-pregnancy, early pregnancy and prepared childbirth as well as topics for seasoned parents such as child rearing, nutrition and safety. Before, during or after pregnancy, Hoag's OB Education classes and seminars promote an environment that is healthy for both parents, grandparents or caregivers. How to Register

To register for classes, you may:
  1. View selection of offered classes (date/time) and complete the Registration Form given to you at your physician's office. To view a description of our OB Education classes, scroll down to "OB Education Class Descriptions" below.
  2. Print the Registration Form and return by mail to
    • Hoag Hospital/OB Education, One Hoag Drive, PO Box 6100, Newport Beach, CA, 92658-6100.
    • If you are paying by credit card, you can fax the registration form to 949/764-6555.
  3. Call OB Education at 949/764-5940 for questions.
  4. E-mail OBEducation@hoaghospital.org.
Classes usually begin during the seventh month of pregnancy, however registration by the third month of pregnancy is encouraged.

OB Education Class Descriptions

Prepared Childbirth Series

This two and one half hour class, held once a week for three weeks, is designed to prepare expectant parents for the challenges of labor and birth.

Topics include:
  • Stages of labor and birth
  • Signs and symptoms of preterm labor and fetal kick counts
  • Pain management strategies, both non-pharmacological and pharmacological
  • Cesarean birth (indications, what to expect and how to recover)
  • Hospital admission procedures
  • PowerPoint presentation of all maternal units (LDR, MBU, NICU)
*Begin these classes around your seventh month of pregnancy,

Prepared Childbirth Super Saturday/Sunday

This comprehensive, abridged one-day class is perfect for those expectant parents unable to attend the traditional class series; held only at Hoag Conference Center.

Topics include:
  • Stages of labor and birth
  • Signs and symptoms of preterm labor, fetal kick counts
  • Pain management strategies, both non-pharmacological and pharmacological
  • Cesarean birth (indications, what to expect and how to recover)
  • Hospital admission procedures
  • PowerPoint presentation of all maternal units (LDR, MBU, NICU)
Moms 35+ Prepared Childbirth Super Saturday

Tailored to the learning needs of expectant moms age 35 and above, this one day class covers all topics discussed in our traditional Super Saturday course, plus information specific to the unique concerns of moms embarking on pregnancy after the age of 35. This comprehensive class is offered every other month at the Hoag Conference Center. We recommend that you are enrolled in this class between your 30th and 35th week of pregnancy.

Topics include:
  • Stages of labor and birth
  • Signs and symptoms of preterm labor, fetal kick counts
  • Maternal-Fetal testing
  • Pain management strategies, both non-pharmacological and pharmacological
  • Cesarean birth (indications, what to expect and how to recover)
  • Hospital admission procedures
  • PowerPoint presentation of all maternal units (Antepartum, FetalDiagnostics, LDR, MBU, NICU)
  • Moms 35+ Resource Network
Private Childbirth Instruction

Spend approximately three and one half hours privately with a childbirth educator who will adapt class content to your specific needs while including childbirth fundamentals.

Prepared Childbirth Refresher

This program is for couples who have taken childbirth classes before and need to only review the labor and delivery process. An intensive three-hour program, this class meets only once.

Topics include:
  • Review of labor and birth process
  • Review of management strategies, both non-pharmacological and pharmacological
  • Cesarean birth (indications and expectations during the postpartum period)
  • PowerPoint presentation of all maternal units (LDR, MBU, NICU)
  • Facilitating sibling adjustment
Baby Care Basics

Learn to care for your baby with confidence and ease. Class topics include recognizing your infant's behavior cues, holding and comforting techniques, bathing, diapering and dressing your newborn and knowing when to call the doctor.

Babysaver (Basic First Aid & Infant/Child CPR)

This two-and-a-half hour course will teach you how to avoid life-threatening emergencies and what to do in the event of an emergency. Recommended for expectant and new parents, grandparents, or child care specialists. Participation is recommended before childbirth or within the first six weeks following childbirth.

Hands-on practice includes:
  • Infant/Child CPR
  • What to do in a choking emergency
  • Baby-proofing your home for safety
  • How to get help in an emergency
  • Carseat safety
  • Basic first aid
Breastfeeding (Making it a Rewarding Experience)

Studies clearly show improved breastfeeding success when a prenatal breastfeeding class is completed. This two and one half hour class allows expectant parents the opportunity to have all of their questions and concerns addressed and provides the practical information necessary to help ensure a rewarding breastfeeding experience. A must for first time parents! All classes are taught by an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC).

Topics include:
  • Preparation for breastfeeding during pregnancy
  • Advantages of breastfeeding to mother and baby
  • Getting off to the best start during the early days
  • Establishing and maintaining an ample milk supply
  • Positioning your baby at your breast
  • How to recognize and avoid common problems
  • Recognize when and where to get help when you need it
Car Seat

Are you ready for the ride home? This class will include information about how to select, use and install your newborn’s car seat.
  • What is the best car seat?
  • How do I position my baby in the car seat?
  • When can my baby face forward in the car?
  • How and where should I install my car seat?

BabyLine - 949/764-BABY

Seven days a week, Hoag's BabyLine is answered by an OB Education Registered Nurse with special expertise and knowledge about pregnancy --- before, during and after --- as well as baby care and breastfeeding. Certified in many areas of childbirth education, our BabyLine staff offers new and expectant parents a key resource of information as well as support, empathy and understanding.

Maternity Tours

Maternity tours of the Labor, Delivery & Recovery (LDR) and Mother Baby Unit (MBU) floors are offered on Sundays (except holidays) . They are conducted by one of the OB Education Registered Nurses and the tour last approximately 40 minutes. Appointments are necessary, so please call Hoag Hospital's Babyline at 949/764-BABY (2229 ) to schedule a tour.

Breastfeeding Clinic (After Baby Comes Home)

A one on one consult with one of our IBCLC Registered Nurses provides new mothers with support, encouragement and answers to questions that commonly arise when the baby comes home from the hospital. Fathers or birth partners are strongly encouraged to attend.

Consult includes:
  • Individual attention to your specific concerns
  • Help with breastfeeding the difficult nurser
  • Nutritional information
  • Instructions on pumping and storage of milk
